12 German start-ups exhibit at EUDEX and Security Essen
Innovations for greater security, new technological solutions and forward-looking business models are being presented by the “Young Innovators” at Security Essen in Hall 5/Stand 5C25 and at Euro Defence Expo (EUDEX), taking place alongside it for the first time, in Hall 3/Stand 3A55. A total of 12 start-ups based in Germany are showcasing their products at a joint stand funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, providing insights into technologies that could help shape the security landscape of tomorrow.
The participating companies cover a broad spectrum, ranging from protective clothing and AI-assisted image analysis to autonomous security robots. The young companies’ portfolios also include digital solutions for visitor management, identity verification and the automation of security processes.
Intelligent vehicle recognition, interceptor drone and emergency charging station
Among the technologies on display are cameras that use artificial intelligence not only to read number plates, but also to identify vehicles by make, model, type and colour. This makes automated vehicle access control considerably more intelligent. At the same time, the technology can verify whether a number plate actually belongs to the vehicle that has been identified.
The “Greif” counter-drone system is another example of the innovative strength of Germany’s start-up scene. Instead of shooting down an unauthorised drone, the system pursues and intercepts it in a controlled manner before bringing it safely to the ground. The interceptor drone can be deployed wherever an uncontrolled crash needs to be avoided – for example, above events, critical infrastructure or densely populated areas.
Another area of innovation addresses the question of how electric vehicles can be charged when a high-capacity power connection is unavailable. A mobile rapid-charging station generates the electricity required directly on site using bioethanol, enabling fast charging independently of the local power grid. Potential applications include temporary locations and vehicle fleets, as well as providing additional backup in the event of power supply disruptions and emergencies.
A stage for the next generation
According to the Start-up Report published by the German Startups Association (Bundesverband Deutsche Startups e. V.) and startupdetector, 29 per cent more start-ups were founded across Germany in 2025 than in the previous year, bringing the total to 3,568. Once established, young companies face the particular challenge of building a sustainable position in the market over the long term. The two Essen trade fairs dedicated to civil and military security provide an important platform for entering international markets, increasing visibility, finding investors and customers, and building valuable networks.
